Taking Your Freezer’s Temperature
You may have a freezer that does not tell you anywhere what the temperature is inside of it. Or, you may have the kind of refrigerator that has a dial reading 1 to 5. Sure, the fifth setting is the warmest, but this doesn’t tell you anything insofar as the actual temperature of your freezer.
If this is the case for your freezer, you can purchase an inexpensive appliance thermometer either online or at your local hardware store. Simply place the thermometer in the freezer and let it sit in there for about 20 minutes. Pull it out – does it say it’s 0 degrees? If not, you’ll need to adjust the temperature via your refrigerator’s control panel.
If the temperature still won’t go back down after you adjust it, then it’s time to call the professionals.
Keep Your Freezer Full, But Not Too Full
To maintain a steady frigid temperature in your freezer, it is important to keep it full. This doesn’t necessarily have to be food if, say, you live alone and would rather not stock your freezer with food that will get freezer-burned before you get the chance to eat it. Instead, you can toss a few extra bags of ice in there to reduce the chances that warm air will circulate around inside your freezer and lower the temperature in there.
However, you don’t want to fill your freezer to the max because then air can’t circulate in there at all, and this isn’t good either. You want a happy medium. Otherwise, you risk not only a reduction in cooling efficiency but also the possibility that you will block an air vent, and this can start a whole load of issues with your freezer’s temperature and moisture levels.
(Incidentally, this same advice applies to your refrigerator as well.)
Storing Heated Food in the Freezer
Have you ever cleaned up hastily after a dinner party and put your hot leftovers in the refrigerator or freezer? This is not a good idea. Yes, either will cool your food down, but the food will also cause the inner temperature of both to rise. This can cause any bacteria that are present in your fridge, freezer, or stored food to multiply exponentially.
Let your food cool before you put it into the refrigerator or freezer. You don’t have to wait until it gets to room temperature. Just wait until it stops steaming and is no longer hot to the touch.
Close the Door
We all remember when our parents kept yelling at us to close the refrigerator or freezer door – and they were right. The more you open the door to your freezer, the more room-temperature air you allow in. This reduces the temperature of the freezer, and the freezer then has to work overtime to get back down to its 0-degree setting.
Have a general idea of what’s in your freezer at all times so that you know, when you go to the freezer, you are going to take the food out that you have in mind and then promptly shut the door.
