Common Ice Maker Issues
Here at Top Shelf, we have extensive experience fixing all things ice maker. Here are some of the more common issues we see. Are any of these similar to what you are experiencing now?
Is your ice maker simply refusing to make ice? If so, you may have a frozen waterline or a clog in your water filter.
First, find and replace the water filter. If that doesn’t do the trick, read on.
Locate the water line and check to see if it is, in fact, frozen. If so, unplug your refrigerator, then turn off your water supply. You can then attempt to thaw out the waterline with a hairdryer – just make sure you keep the hairdryer above the water source to avoid suffering an electric shock.
Once you’ve completed this, turn the water supply back on. Do you hear water running into the ice maker? If so, then the problem should be fixed. If not, or if you notice the water that is coming out is discolored, then you’ve done all you can do, and you need to call a professional.
The Ice Refuses to Come Out
One of the most common reasons why ice refuses to come out is because you have accidentally bumped into the control arm while moving food around in the freezer, setting it to the “OFF” position. This will, of course, stop the production of ice.
However, if the control arm is still “ON”, and you have ice in the ice mold, then the problem more than likely lies with the motor or gearbox, or there is some kind of electrical issue going on.
Here’s what you can do to try to fix it yourself.
Make sure all the electrical connections look fine and undisturbed. Slide the refrigerator away from the wall, turn off the water supply, and turn off the power. Unplug the quick release plug, located on the back wall inside the freezer. Then reconnect it to make sure there is a secure connection.
Physically take out the ice that remains in the mold by adding water and letting it sit so as to melt it a bit and make it easier to budge. Put the power back on, then lift the control arm to the “OFF” position. Put the control arm back down, then wait about 10 seconds. Your mold should re-fill with water.
Wait about 3 or 4 hours for the ice to freeze, then try to eject it. If it doesn’t budget, then the issue is likely with your motor or gearbox, and you’ll need a professional to come repair or replace it.
“Easy Fix” Issues
When your ice maker isn’t working, the cause isn’t always something that requires a repairman to come to your house. For instance, you may have the freezer’s thermostat set too low, or you may have accidentally enabled the “pause” feature. You may also need nothing more than to change your ice maker’s water filter. Double-check that things are not engaged that shouldn’t be and change your water filter if you haven’t done so recently.
If none of these activities solve the problem, then you’ll need to call a professional to come and take a better look.
